Drone Based Water Sampling

Water sampling plays a crucial role in protecting our natural habitats and preserving aquatic ecosystems. By regularly monitoring water quality, we can detect changes and address potential threats, keeping our rivers, lakes, and oceans thriving.

With drones, we can go where no boat has gone before. These versatile UAVs effortlessly navigate through hard-to-reach spots, making remote and hazardous sampling locations a breeze.


Drone based water sampling provides several benefits. It operates fully automatically, eliminating the need for human intervention. Drones are programmed to fly to predetermined locations, descend to the desired altitude, release a messenger to fill the sampler, and then return with the sample. This autonomous operation streamlines the sampling process and reduces the risk of human error.


Drone based remote water sampling ensures precise location and depth collection. Samples can be obtained with pinpoint accuracy at specified sampling points, improving the reliability of data collection and analysis. By specifying the desired altitude, the drone can descend to the appropriate depth, enabling sampling from specific depths and enhancing the precision of water analysis. Additionally, this technology allows for safe sample collection in hazardous or inaccessible environments, overcoming obstacles that would otherwise hinder direct access to the water body. UAV based water sampling has long-distance capabilities, enabling sample collection from distances ranging from a few hundred meters to several kilometers away from the take-off position.

How It Works

Ruttner Water Sampler: The system utilizes Ruttner water samplers with a volume of 1 liter for DJI M300RTK drones or up to 5 liters for heavy lift drones. These samplers ensure accurate and reliable sample collection.

UgCS SkyHub: The onboard computer, UgCS SkyHub, controls the water sampling process in a fully automatic mode. It enables mission planning and automatic flight control for water sampling missions.

Radar Altimeter: A radar altimeter provides real-time altitude measurement during the drone's flight. It ensures precise descent to the desired sampling location and the required depth for sample collection.


Messenger Release Device: The only specific component developed for the water sampling system is the messenger release device. It facilitates the controlled release of the sampler to collect the water sample.
