Getting Started with Drone-Based GPR Systems

A drone-based Ground-Penetrating Radar system offers many advantages over ground-based models. By being aerially mounted it allows for rapid and efficient coverage of large areas, making it suitable for archaeological surveys, geological mapping, and infrastructure inspections. Drones equipped with GPR systems can access hard-to-reach or hazardous locations without endangering personnel. Additionally, drone-based GPR ensures minimal disruption to the environment.

Wondering what's necessary to embark on a drone-based GPR survey?

In addition to the drone itself, you can select various antenna options. These antennas span multiple frequencies, beginning with low-frequency options for deeper penetration, ranging from 50 MHz to 400 MHz, and high-frequency options for shallower penetration, ranging from 500 MHz to 1000 MHzTo ensure a successful survey with airborne GPR, it is recommended to use a True Terrain Following kit. This kit includes the UgCS flight planning mission software, enabling you to plan your survey lines, and a laser altimeter, which ensures precise terrain following during flight.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Drone-Based GPR System

First, It's important to identify the primary purpose for using GPR. Different applications, such as archaeological surveys, utility locating, or concrete inspection, may require specific GPR systems with varying frequency ranges and capabilities.

Depth and Resolution: Determine the maximum depth you need to penetrate and the level of resolution required.

Frequency Range:  Select the appropriate frequency range for your application. Lower frequencies (e.g., 100 MHz) are suitable for deeper penetration, while higher frequencies (e.g., 1 GHz) offer higher resolution but shallower depth penetration.

Exploring Drone Based GPR Solutions?

Our team of drone experts can help you find the right solution for your needs.

Tailored Recommendations: We understand that every project is unique
Training and Support: Our assistance doesn't end at purchase
Maintenance: We ensure that your equipment is always in good working condition and ready to be used

Antenna Configuration:  Consider the type and configuration of antennas (e.g., single, dual, or multi-frequency antennas) that best suit your needs. The choice of antennas impacts the system's versatility and performance.

Consider Your Drone's Payload Capacity: Assess our drone offerings to discover options that provide extended flight times and increased payload capacities, thereby improving performance of the UAV with the GPR. Among our customers, the DJI M350 stands out as a top pick due to its remarkable 55-minute flight endurance and effortless compatibility with a wide range of GPR systems.

Training and Support: Adequate training is crucial for users to operate the GPR system effectively and interpret data accurately.

Cost:  Establish a budget for the GPR system, taking into account not only the initial purchase cost but also ongoing expenses such as maintenance, software updates, and accessories.

Regulatory Compliance: Be aware of any regulations or licensing requirements related to GPR use in your area or for specific applications (e.g., utility locating).
